Eastern Illinois football had a golden opportunity to secure a nice non-conference win on Saturday during its home opener. Unfortunately that opportunity was not to be as EIU committed five turnovers during a 37-7 loss to Central Arkansas.
With the loss EIU fell to 0-2 on the season and will open Ohio Valley Conference play next week at UT Martin. While the season is not lost, the margin for error just became slimmer as EIU most likely will have to win the OVC automatic bid to make the FCS playoffs in back-to-back years.
On the flip side congrats to EIU volleyball for picking up a big win over Clemson at the Michigan State tournament. The Panthers finished the tourney at 1-2 but a nice win over an ACC opponent is always welcome. EIU is now 4-3 under first year head coach Kate Price.
Home action is on tap tomorrow at EIU with women's soccer hosting UMKC at 1 p.m. at Lakeside Field with women's rugby hosting Notre Dame at 3 p.m.
Thanks to all the Panther fans for attending today's football game including a strong showing from the Panther Nation Student Group. The chants and cheers for Sean Payton were much appreciated and I think the Super Bowl winning coach had a good visit back to campus.
Look for EIU to fall from the FCS top 25 polls as several teams pulled upsets of FBS opponents including James Madison shocking nationally ranked Virginia Tech.
